A newspaper clipping with the following story was found in the family Bible of Jim and Mollie Williamson:
"An Elopement
Miss Grace Williamson, 17 years old, is supposed to have eloped with Verm Brumley [sic], about 21-years-old. When she was a little girl, Grace Ethington was taken from the Orphans home at Atchison by Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Williamson. While they did not adopt her, they cared for and treated her as a daughter. Since the death of Mr. Williamson, she has been living on the farm near Troy or in California with Mrs. Williamson and attending school.
Brumley is a nephew of Mrs. Williamson and worked on the farm of Tom Woods, his great-uncle.
Mrs. Williamson slept across the hall from the girl and both doors were open the night last week when she left. The girl also had her window up and Mrs. Williamson said she had best put it down on account of the draft. Instead, Miss Grace asked to be allowed to shut the door. In the night, she fastened a rope to her bed and slid out of the window and the pair was gone.
Wednesday, Mrs. Williamson informed the Troy Times office that she had not heard from them, but she cautioned us not to speak unkindly of Grace. We are sure we have never heard anything but good of her in the past and hope she has just as good luck now as if she had all the advantages of a church wedding, with invitations printed at the Times office."
