  General Notes:

While there is speculation on some internet sites that Jordan's father was also Jordan, I have found no documentation to support the claim.
On page 45 of The Invisible Line, the author introduces his reader to Jordan Spencer: "It was also possible that a young man named Jordan Spencer was living with the [Freeman] family and assisting with their work. Spencer had been born around the time of Freeman's emancipation. Years later some of Spencer's children would remember that he had come from Virginia, while others figured he was from Kentucky. He may have been Freeman's son or brother or other kin. Perhaps, like Freeman, he had been a slave emancipated by the Spencer family, or he may have adopted the last after hearing Freeman talk about his former owner." ²
