"About 1839 ten years after Jeremiah Sr.'s death, Wood siblings John, Thomas, Wesley, Bird and Nancy with spouses and children in tow, formed a wagon train with about 40 neighbors (Dooley's, Sharps and Karnes) and headed west for Missouri. John's family settled in Clay County, and the rest settled in Buchanan County (except Wesley who continued on to Iowa). Jeremiah Jr. followed several years later with their mother, Polly and settled in Buchanan County. Sisters Mary and Demartha stayed behind in Bedford County. Mary married Nick Wilkerson for whom "Wilkerson Gap" is named on the turnpike. John's brother Henry headed south and became a "Firecracker" Methodis minister. " 1
