Sept. 15, 1877
GEORGE LILES, one of the oldest citizens of the county died at the home of his son in law MR. HUITT, east of Carrollton last week. He was one of the valiant soldiers who under General Jackson, fought at the battle of New Orleans.

Affidavit of Decease signed by David Liles, 17 Sep 1873.

• Military, Bet 13 Nov 1814 and 13 May 1815, Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee, USA. ¹ War of 1812 Pension Record #sc-6037

Volunteered and served as a private in Cpt. Hurts company of the 1st Regt (Rouslton's) West Tennessee Militia. He was engaged in the Battle of New Orleans, and eventually received a pension of $8 per month for his service. Considerable correspondence concerning his claim for pension and land grant due to lost discharge papers. Was described in one document as an "ignorant but very honest man". He was obviously illiterate since his correspondence is signed with his mark "X".
