GENERATION IV BERRY CHRISTA COLUMBUS BERRY 1844-1900 (Nickname Lum or Lummy for Columbus) Son of James Grimes Berry & Lucinda Craven Husband of Nancy Jane Carrico Father of Willard Raymond Berry
Christa Columbus Berry was the 4th son of James Grimes Berry and Lucinda Craven Berry. He had four brothers: one dying as a young man, Willaim T; one as child, James H; and two that married and raised children of their own, Uriah and John C.. There were two others -- no known information. (1)
He was born in Greene Co., Il. Aug. 5, 1844 while his parents were visiting there. When he was a month old, he and his mother returned home. (2) He enjoyed reading and was well educated. His schooling provided by St. Louis schools. When he was 15, between 1858-9 he was engaged as a clerk in the city weigher's office. By 1860, he and brother Uriah came back in Greene Co., and stayed at Aunt Ann Craven Rountree's farm. (3) & (4)
The war was calling all young men and after his brother and dad enlisted, Christa longed to join them. In 1862 he joined the Union Army and served in the 122nd Regiment of Illinois Infantry Volunteers, Company C. He served three years and was mustered out July 15, 1865. Son Wiley wrote to Russell, quoting his dad remembrances:
"There was a trading post there (at Old Kane) where the boys were enlisting....Just as he (Christa) got to the road at Old Kane he looked back in the west and the sun was just going down over the horizon. He went in and told the officer in charge that he wanted to enlist. They told him he was too small... and too young. He was not quite 18. He told them he was 18 and he wanted to enlist as his older brother John had enlisted and he wanted to be with him. They finally agreed to take him as a drummer boy. He served as a drummer boy for three years." (Words in parentheses added). After the war was over he came back to Aunt Ann's and it was here he met and married Nancy Jane Carrico, a young lady from the surrounding area. Their marriage was May 1, 1869.(5)
Christa wanted to farm so they decided to join his family in Missouri, James G. (father) Uriah, John (brothers) and families. They left Kane, IL. and drove their team of oxen 250 miles to Cass Co., Mo.(6) They purchased 160 acres of land adjoining the Berry Brothers north 80, just across the road in Camp Branch Twp.. Their first ten children were born there, including grandpa Willard. Winnie & Willie 1871, twins, (Willie died an infant), Emma 1872, Amasa 1873 (died 1875), Sylvester 1875 (lived 4 mot death 1876), Charles Christa 1877, John Clark 1879, Elmer Eugene 1881, Andrew Earl 1883, and Willard Raymond 1885. (7)
The first years in Cass Co. were hard and cruel. As noted three children died during that time and are buried there in Clearfork cemetery. Times got better and the family grew with no more loss of life.
Christa served the community where they lived. He was school director for two years and also district clerk at one time. He belonged to Nonpariel Lodge, No. 370, A.F.& A.M. of
East Lynne, and he and his family were members of the Baptist church. (2) It's not known why, but in 1885 Christa and Nancy decided to sell their farm and buy another one in Kansas. On Nov. 18, 1885 they purchased a farm near Ash Grove, KS.(8) for $1,536. The first year went well but in 1887 when the corn was in full roasting ear stage a devastating hail storm beat the crop into the ground.
Discouraged, Christa accepted Aunt Ann's offer to rent Rountree farm and he, Nancy and family returned to IL. This move was with eight children for while in Kansas, Wiley was born, 1887.
Christa and Nancy leased Aunt Ann's farm from 1888 until 1899. Here their last two children were born, Theodore 1891 and Ann 1893. Aunt Ann promised to will her farm to Christa. When she died in 1899, he inherited it, as promised.
Because of a lingering illiness, Christa soon gave up farming. In early 1900, he moved his family to Kane.(9) On Nov. of that same year he was carried on a cot to the Kane Railroad Station and was taken by rail to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. There he was operated on for gall-stones and liver problems. The operation wasn't a success, he died Dec 11, 1900. His wife survived him to finish raising their children.(10) He is buried in Lax cemetery.

• Residence, 1886, Ash Grove, Lincoln, Kansas, USA. 14 Whatever the reasons, they sold their farm in Cass County and bought another near Ash Grove, Orange Twp., Lincoln County, Kansas for 31,536 on November 18, 1885. This is fine farming land on Salt Creek bottom, a few miles north of Lincoln and upstream from Barnard, Kansas.
Christa's son Wiley E. Berry, who had the cancelled check, later wrote: "Early in 1886 my father and mother moved from their farm near Garden City, Missouri, to a farm he had bought in Kansas. They built a new home and started to farm. In the summer of1887 they had a wonderful prospect for a good crop, but just about the time the corn was in full roasting ear there came a terrific hailstorm and simply beat the crop into the ground. This so disheartened my father that he came back to Illinois to see his Aunt Ann [Craven ] Rountree and she rented him the farm known as Rountree Bend and promised to will it to him at her death. This she did. It was while he was in Illinois on this trip that I first saw the light of day on Sunday morning, August 28, 1887, at 4 a.m. We came to Illinois shortly after I was born."

Christa and Nancy's last two children were born on the Rountree Bend Farm: Theodore in 1891 and Anna Mariah Brinet in 1893. Christa leased the Rountree Bend Farm from 1888 until Ann Rountree died in 1899 and he inherited the-farm. But Christa was not well. The family moved to Kane by 1900.
