Kentucky A History of the state, W. H. Perrin- 1888 Nelson C. Tuttle, a native of Clark County, KY. was born March 8th. 182 5. His father, William S. Tuttle, a native of Culpeper County, Va. was bo rn February 14th. 1797. He was a farmer by occupation and came to Kentuc ky in 1800 with his parents, who settled at what is known as Dunaway's Sta tion where he spent the remainder of his life and died May 5th.1857. Poli tically he was an uncompromising Whig. He served as magistrate under bo th the old and new constitutions, and at the time of his death was Justice of the Peace, as well as the administrator of many estates.
He married Nancy Conkwright of Clark County, daughter of John and Ketur ah (Lewis) Conkwright, natives respectively of Mecklenburg County, N.C. a nd Virginia. Five children were born to their union. The subject of th is sketch being the youngest.
John Tuttle, the grandfather of our subject, was a native of Culpeper Coun ty Virginia, of Scotch descent, and located lands in Clark County, KY abo ut 1801 where he lived until his death having been for many years a tobac co inspector. He was a graduate of Williams College. The maternal grandf ather of Nelson C. Tuttle settled on upper Howard's Creek and took pa rt in many of the fights with the Indians, so frequent in those days.
Nelson C. Tuttle was reared on the home farm and received his education fr om the common schools and at home. He removed to his present locati on in 1847 where he owns 300 acres of fine blue grass land, well stocke d. September 9/1847 he married Mary Ann Finnell of Estill County, KY daug hter of John and Susan Weber Finnell, natives respectively of Culpeper cou nty, VA. and Estill County, KY. Four children were born to this union; Su san J., William S., John N.C., and James A.
Politically Mr. Tuttle is a Republican and was formerly a Whig. He serv ed as constable under the old constitution and was county surveyor for fo ur years. He was commissioned by Gov.Crittenden as Lieutenant of militi a, and in 1880 was appointed by Gen. Walker, Secretary of the Interio r, to take the census of Goode's precinct. He has been called to administ er many large estates, never failing to give entire satisfaction. He h as been a Mason since 1848, a member of the Right angle Lodge, No.233, F a nd A.M. and was made a Royal Arch Mason in 1852, and is a member of the Wi nchester chapter no. 12.. The subject of the above sketch died October 7/1887.
